Shigeo Kawazu Japanese Philosophical Psychologist.
Born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1953, Shigeo Kawazu was educated in local public schools. In 1972, he entered the College of Liberal Arts at International Christian University (ICU), where he majored primarily in Classics.
He subsequently moved to North America to pursue further studies, transferring to West Virginia University to major in Psychology. He then entered the Master’s program at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Under the supervision of Professor Anne Treisman, he conducted experimental research on the visual perception of symmetry.
However, experiencing a conflict between scientific psychology and his philosophical interests, he transferred to the graduate program at Cornell University to major in Human Development and Family Studies. While enrolled in the doctoral program there, he conducted an experiment on the visual perception of symmetry with the same design as the one conducted at UBC. Since his Master’s thesis based on this experiment was accepted, he decided to return to Japan.
Upon returning, he worked at the ATR Auditory and Visual Perception Research Laboratories and served as a Research Assistant at the Institute for Educational Research at ICU. Later, he was invited to International Budo University as an Associate Professor, eventually becoming a Professor before retiring in 2018.
During his career, he also served as a Research Fellow at the ICU Institute for Educational Research and as a part-time lecturer at several institutions, including Ichihara Nursing School, Kisarazu National College of Technology, and Kameda Nursing School.
Since his retirement, he has continued his academic activities as a researcher and lecturer and remains active in presenting at research meetings.
